I finally saw Before Midnight, the third movie in the Ethan Hawke/Julie Delpy series and boy, is it still resonating with me. Of the trio, Midnight features the least romance and chemistry but is by far the most searing. Watching their characters fight onscreen (and did they ever go at it!) was as uncomfortable as watching a couple duke it out in public. There was such a voyeurism in seeing two people, sharing so much history and familiarity, turning their passion into bitterness. I was kind of hoping for a gentler film, but that's not what happens after a couple met 18 years ago.
And as much as I wanted to walk out in the middle of it, I'll probably see it again.
