The arrival of email sounded the death knell of Canada Post, and cellphones opened the doors to hearse.
We had pretty decent service with Canada Post before technology became commonplace, especially considering the vast expanse of this land and the small population inhabiting it. Send a letter postmarked for the other side of the country, and you knew it'd get there within a week. It wasn't a perfect system but by golly, it worked pretty well for the country's size and low population.
Enter the 2000s.
I try to avoid using Canada Post whenever possible because:
-the service isn't great
-it seems like they aren't at all concerned with trying to improve service
-they don't take complaints seriously
Recently, I bought something on Amazon and eagerly check the tracking everyday (now there's a good invention). It showed my package in the warehouse, gave me an expected delivery date, and then updated it to show it was out for delivery. Yes! I could almost feel it in my hands.
Fast forward to the delivery date and I make sure I'm home all day because I don't know what hour they'll arrive. I work and work and work, and there's no knock at the door or call on my phone. Finally, around 3:30, I decide to risk venturing out to check the mail downstairs; it'll only take a couple of minutes.
Imagine my surprise when I opened my door and found a delivery notice on the door handle.
I. Was. Home. All. Day.
What really bugged me was not only was I home all day and I didn't get it delivered (so close!), but that the deliverer was actually in front of my door and didn't bother to knock, only to hang the delivery notice on the handle, fer chrissakes.
Sigh. Fine. This means a trip to the post office to pick it up, which is a minor inconvenience. I'll still get my package that day, just later than I was hoping. And then, an email from Canada Post arrived in my inbox, letting me know that my package was available for pickup. Great! I hopped on my bike and pedaled through slush and snow...only to find out it wasn't there.
Upset, I filed two tickets to complain, and posted a couple of (polite) choice words on their Facebook site. What happened? They emailed me about one ticket to say their records showed my package was delivered, and that the ticket was closed.
