Coding Bootcamp: Day 1

Page Title

My First Day

Last week, I signed up for a nine-week coding bootcamp course at Bitmaker Labs and the admissions guy, Erik, passed on one tidbit of advice he wished he'd followed when he was in our shoes: chronicle the experience. It's been a while since I wrote in here, but I know that when it's all done and over — and with the course being such an intense whirlwind — I'll want to look back at these days to see how far I've come.

My coding experience consisted of a bit of HTML and even less CSS and I didn't get a chance to complete the prep before this morning, so I was wondering what kind of rude awakening I'd be in for. But because it was the first day and there were so many other students who'd signed up late as well, I didn't feel too alone.

Class started a little earlier today with a mini coffee social, where we hung out on couches and chatted amongst ourselves. In a class of a just over a dozen, almost half of us are female, which is pretty cool to see. There aren't really any desks, just long tables in three rows with comfy wheelie chairs set up behind them.

In terms of class material, we cemented what we learned in the prep work, so I'm going to try and attempt to explain it with an HTML table (I also may or may not be referring to this oh-so-helpful site for assistance while I draw up my table).

Github Terminal Sublime Inception Novel
  • Where we create repos (repositories) to make directories and add/delete/move files
  • The program we shell with (i.e. type in commands to make things go
  • A super snazzy text editor program that can be changed into different coloured themes
  • Our first assignment, where we had to mimic the movie's theme in making a Github repo
  • The second assignment, which made me realize the importance (and aggravation) of capitalization
  • And that was the first day!
