It's cold, that's no surprise. But what has caught me off-guard is the amount of people denying this has anything to do with climate change and global warming. Last night, I read Rush Limbaugh's take on the polar vortex, and it's astounding how this guy not only believes the shit he's spewing, but that he's given a platform to do so.
It's simple: we're starting to see the physical effects of the planet dying (at our hands). Global warming isn't non-existent, as Rush Limbaugh and the rest of his acolytes would have you believe, because this winter's been bitterly cold, and nor is the polar vortex something the left created to suit their own needs.
In fact, this winter and the bitterly cold temperatures are indication of the opposite. All you have to do is think of water freezing. As it gets colder, the molecules move slower and get closer together. Expand that on a massive, planetary scale, and you would get weather and climate that would become more and more similar until it's just one temperature all the time.
Instead, the opposite is happening and we're seeing weather that's becoming more volatile, extreme, unpredictable, and varied. Australia recorded its hottest year last year, and people in the southern United States are wearing down coats in January. But after only a few days of us North Americans experiencing temperatures so cold, boiling water turns to snow if you dump it over a balcony (not that I, ahem, know from personal experience), the temperature is warming by almost 40 degrees in the span of 24 hours.
And like a diabetic who frequently experiences blood sugar yo-yos that lead to increased risk of complications and diseases, this constant yo-yoing on Earth is bound to cause permanent damage, too.
It's just a matter of time.
But until then, I'm going to enjoy not having to wear a thousand layers tomorrow.
